V CENTENARY OF THE TOUR OF THE WORLD OF MAGALLANES AND ELCANO (1519 - 1522)

From the Asociación de Bibliotecarios de Toledo (ABITO) and with funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Spanish government, we started this project in commemoration of the V Centenary of Magellan and Elcano's (1519-1522) circumnavigation of the world, considered the greatest maritime feat of all time. This project covers different activities and events with which it is intended to spread information and provide knowledge of this incredible adventure that led to a social, economic and cultural change in the history of humanity. The activities will be carried out mainly in the Cultural Houses of Toledo, Novés and Cabañas de la Sagra and this website will collect all the information, images and videos of each one of them. WINDOWS TO HISTORY: THE STRAIT OF MAGELLAN AND THE SPICE ISLANDS IN THE XVIth

Our Association, as a continuation and complement to its previous project "circumdedisti me", continues to promote educational and cultural exchanges with other institutions, always with the objective of disseminating the heritage and work of our Libraries, for this, and thanks to the Ministry of Culture and Sport of the Government of Spain, we continue to carry out activities now focused on the two most important points of the expedition: the Strait of Magellan and the Spice Islands. "Exhibition Knowing the Biodiversity of a Great Trip"

The Association of Librarians of the province of Toledo "ABITO", on the occasion of the V Centenary of the First Tour of the World, presents this exhibition that is part of the project "WINDOWS TO HISTORY" to publicize and value this event of the history of humanity, and specifically of our country.

The First Around the World of Magellan and Elcano, represented a paradigm shift in the history of the world, at a scientific, cultural, commercial and even gastronomic level; and this project, aims to bring this historic feat of Spanish navigation closer to the public in an accessible way, and promoting the use of new communication technologies, open a space for knowledge and reflection, to value the existing documentary legacy in the libraries and archives.

This photographic exhibition, part of one of the accounts of the Magellan and Elcano expedition, specifically that of Antonio Pigafetta, and with it we will bring you closer to the fauna and flora of the first circumnavigation of the world, and especially that of the Strait of Magellan and the Spice Islands in the 16th century.

Our Association, as a continuation and complement to its previous project "circumdedisti me", which, like "windows to history", was part of the official projects of the Commission for the V centenary of the Ministry of Culture, thus continues to promote educational and cultural exchanges , with other institutions, always with the objective of disseminating the heritage and work of our Libraries.
